چکیده

A mutant gene that is responsible for generating cauliflower-like heads in the model laboratory plant Arabidopsis has been cloned, and the same gene has been shown to be mutant in edible cauliflowers.

Gibberellin Control of Reproductive Transitions in Brassica oleracea Curd Development

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) and broccoli (B. oleracea var. italica) differ in the developmental stage of the reproductive meristem at harvest. A cauliflower head is formed by arrest at the inflorescence meristem stage and broccoli at the flower bud stage, and the horticultural value of the crop depends on synchronous development across the head. In other plant species, gibbere...

Characterization of MdMADS2, a member of the SQUAMOSA subfamily of genes, in apple.

A MADS-box gene, MdMADS2, was isolated from the apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) var Fuji and its developmental expression pattern was studied during flower development. MdMADS2 shares a high degree of amino acid sequence identity with the SQUAMOSA subfamily of genes. RNA blot analysis showed that MdMADS2 is transcribed through all stages of flower development, and its transcription was seen in...

EMF genes regulate Arabidopsis inflorescence development.

Mutations in EMBRYONIC FLOWER (EMF) genes EMF1 and EMF2 abolish rosette development, and the mutants produce either a much reduced inflorescence or a transformed flower. These mutant characteristics suggest a repressive effect of EMF activities on reproductive development. To investigate the role of EMF genes in regulating reproductive development, we studied the relationship between EMF genes ...

The purple cauliflower arises from activation of a MYB transcription factor.

Anthocyanins are responsible for the color of many flowers, fruits, and vegetables. An interesting and unique Purple (Pr) gene mutation in cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var botrytis) confers an abnormal pattern of anthocyanin accumulation, giving the striking mutant phenotype of intense purple color in curds and a few other tissues. To unravel the nature of the Pr mutation in cauliflower, we i...
